Which local retailer (Best Buy / FRYs / Circuit city / Sears / Conns) has the best price and after sales support? Extended service plans run from $250 to $650 (for 3 – 6 years), is it worthwile purchasing this?

I’m in need of a new tv, but don’t know much about plasma versus lcd, or the difference in brands.
Black friday ads have a 42 inch Polaroid LCD 1080p HDTV for $598
and a Samsung 50″ Plasma HDTV for $798 – both from Walmart.
We would like at least a 42 inch, but the 50 inch size wouldn’t be out of the question.
That said, I’m not sure of the difference in brands or if plasma or lcd is the way to go. Any help here? The only thing I’ve noticed is that plasmas seem to be cheaper?
Thanks in advance!
Random question – do plasmas “hum”? I read this on another review- any truth?
These opinions seem as divided as I am!

Well i have a 32 inch lcd 720p poloroid tv. I want to upgrade. My choices are a plasma 50 inch samsung 720p or 42 inch lcd poloroid 1080p. the difference in price is around $200. am i going to be happy with a 8 inch difference for 1080p or is it worth it to get the 50 inch that’s only 720p?
I mostly would use this tv for video gaming and i sit about 6.5 feet away. i could get as far back as 17 feet. I really would like the 50 inch. because paying 600$ just for a 10 inch difference doesn’t seem worth it

Is it possible that a TV stand that says it can hold upto a 50″ LCD or plasma TV and 135 lbs, actually hold a 52-inch HDTV?

hi, we have been thinking of buying a 50 inch lcd tv for a while now. we went viewing them last week but the guy in the shop put us off. he asked us where we were planning on having the tv, we told him on the wall above the fireplace, he said that because we have an open coal fire it would in time ruin the tv and it is not the best place to keep it unless we want to replace it often…does this sound right? we have seen plenty of people have the tv on the wall above the fire?
