I want to get a new 50 inch HDTV. At this size should I get plasma or lcd? Is 1080p worth the extra cost?
I have read on cnet etc but I am still confused if I should get a plasma or lcd, what are the pros and cons of both? Also I have heard that 1080p resolution is overrated because none of the networks are going to be broadcasting anytime soon in 1080p. Should I not concern myself with 1080p?

I saved the money and got a 1080i. For the next many years, the networks aren’t broadcasting any higher than that.
Plasma or LCD, I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend. If you get a good brand plasma (Pioneer, etc) it will look just as good as an LCD, imo. Personally, I was just in the same situation, and I chose the Samsung HPT5064 plasma. It is 50 inches and has an upgraded anti-glare screen. $1700 on amazon.com. I wasn’t able to find this model at any stores, and I was told it was because the better screen makes it a much better value than an equivalent LCD of its size. I still think though, that the crisper picture will always be on the LCD, but for me, it wasn’t worth the double to triple cost.
This is just my experience after just making the same decision. Hope it helps. Good luck
Hi, I shall answer your question today. I work in a store that is dedicated to consumer electronics and I know my stuff about electronics. Here’s the deal, my advice to you would be to stay as far away as you can from plasma TV’s. Yes I know they are great but the quality of the parts within the TV aren’t. Plasma last anywhere from 5-10 years maybe even more, depending on the use and maintnance. LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is used in modern day monitors and TV’s. Their life expectancy last twice, even up to three times longer than Plasma. LCD gives you a more real life-like look and besides when you turn the TV off and compare LCD to plasma, you get a really obvious GLARE on Plasma and on LCD you dont get one as much, almost none. When you are in the market for such a TV as that size of a big boy, take a look at the ”CONTRAST RATIO” that tells you the quality of clarity in the picture as well as, how detailed the colors are used. The format you will see it will be something like this….10000:1 the higher the left number, the better quality you get. Now as for the High Definition Resolution, I consider getting 1080p Full HD Yes it may be true that there are not many shows being brodcasted in 1080p but you will get an awesome picture combining that picture using your HIGH NUMBERS in your CONTRAST RATIO. I consider getting 1080p because you are looking at getting yourself a TV that will last you anywhere starting from 5 years up to even 20, 30 years (considering if you get plasma, LCD, usage of TV, and maintnance.) At those years I almost guarantee that there will be 1080p at that moment of time. Hey and before I forget, make sure how many HDMI INPUTS there are on the TV. You will most likely need about 2, 3 inputs considering for the future one for the HDTV box, one for the future for HD DVD players, and the optional third input for the gaming system. HDMI is the best cable in the market that will use your TV to its fullest potential. Don’t get COMPONENT CABLES (the five wire assorting in the different colors of red, green, blue, white, and red) that is the second-best type of cable to use. HDMI is THE BEST. Good luck to you and if you have anymore questions. my email is amart55886@hotmail.com!
save your money. you wont need 1080P for over a decade. no stations or shows are being broadcast in 1080p, you are exactly right.
plasma or LCD is a choice, i have heard that plasma has a shorter life., and LCD is less expensive to replace (a bulb rahter than the whole thing) if the tube goes bad.
